The American Airlines flight to JFK was chosen over our usual BA flight to save 500 british pounds ( can't find the symbol on this new US keyboard) .  Same plane, same seats, slightly different departure time but big price difference. Good reason to switch loyalty.
The service was not as formal nor attentive as provided by BA staff, but the food was equally bland.
Weirdly given how TSA conscious the USA government and population are about safety, I found the AA security demands pretty lax.  The initial security announcement hasn't been changed in 25 years and the demand to stay buckled in when the seat belt light is alluminated was disregarded by passengers and staff throughout the flight.  Babies walking in the aisles and toilets in use while the plane bobbled in turbelence.
Global Entry has made arrival at JFK pretty smooth and baggage claim takes more than twice as long as it does at T5 at Heathrow.

After a snafu at the taxi line with a man who stepped in front of us to snag the first taxi ( there were so many available, it's almost laughable that he felt he needed to win this one) but there you go.  Welcome to New York. A slight but uneasy little shudder shook my resolve to embrace this experiment.
The trip to 124 West 80th Street NYC 10024 was uneventful and set us back $ 73.00
Alex, the owners son, met us to show us the ropes which are not that many to master in a small flat. Toilet flushes one way downstairs and the other way upstairs. Televisions are state of the art smart devices which is new, but we'll figure it out.
We were grateful he helped with our bags up the four flights, 46 steps, and then another to our bedroom floor, which is accessed via a rather demanding steel, spiral staircase.

After a short unpacking session, we explored the neighbourhood for the closest grocery stores.  Boy oh boy is New York a different animal when it somes to grocery shopping. A Fairway and Citarella are next to each other, literally sharing a party wall.  I may find their differences over time, but at first flush they offer about the same high end delicatessen offerings except the very enticing fish and meat counters at Citarella.

First dinner was a success at the Oxbow Tavern on Columbus at 71st.
